Mobile Search Widget Optimisation

Project Overview
As part of a series of rapid-iteration UX improvements (typically completed within 0.5 to 3 days), we focused on enhancing the mobile search experience for a travel platform. Tasks were initiated via JIRA briefs and developed collaboratively with product managers to align with broader user experience goals.

Challenge
Contiki users primarily browse and review trips on mobile devices, making mobile usability critical to conversion. However, users were struggling to find relevant trips quickly due to limited screen space and under-optimized filtering tools. The existing search widget lacked flexibility and didn’t offer enough contextual support.

Approach
We explored several UX examples and tested multiple layouts and interaction models. Key areas of focus included:

  • Search Filter Redesign: Tested both single-line and two-line formats for filter options. The two-line layout offered improved readability and made better use of space, allowing the content to “breathe” naturally.

  • Broader UX Thinking: In parallel, we developed a high-level concept for redesigning the search and filter functionality on the full results page. While not implemented at this stage, this helped shape future considerations and ensure consistency across mobile and desktop experiences.

  • User-Centered Iteration: Based on testing feedback, we prioritized clarity, efficiency, and smooth mobile interactions tailored to the needs of mobile-first users.

Outcome
The redesigned mobile search widget significantly improved usability, making it easier for users to discover and refine trip options. The conceptual work on the results page laid the groundwork for more cohesive future enhancements across platforms—especially important for Contiki’s mobile-dominant audience.
